Luxury On Your Lips: Explore The Most Expensive Lipsticks Of All Time

9/29/2023

Picture
An essential part of everyday makeup rituals, lipsticks have found their niche in the world of luxury cosmetics. Their exquisite packaging, intriguing or even rare ingredients, and often limited availability make certain lipsticks coveted assets. Some of the most expensive lipsticks not only accentuate beauty but also symbolise one’s status and affluence.

Whether you like a bold lip crayon or a matte lipstick for daylong styling, the most expensive lipstick brands are elevating the makeup bag essentials to a whole new dimension with their creations. While many of them were limited-edition items, some continue to retail with sky-high price tags. A luminous sheen, creamy texture and longevity are some markers of an expensive lipstick. Add to it the craftsmanship of high-end designer brands, or gold and diamond studded artistic casings, and their values effortlessly run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, even reaching millions.

Moreover, the elite beauty market is continuously expanding with new entrants like Chanel’s luxurious lipstick range 31 Le Rouge lip colour line. Calling it a worthy investment, some magazines have even equated it with the fashion Maison’s noted garments, handbags and shoes.

These are some of the most expensive lipsticks ever made

H. Couture Beauty Diamond lipstick
Value: USD 14 million

Presumably the most expensive lipstick to be created, the H Couture Beauty Diamond lipstick is the ultimate makeup item for beauty lovers with a taste for luxury. Although it is no longer available, it tops the list because of the staggering price for a single piece. The lip colour was refillable and came accompanied by a stunning mascara from the label.

While each stick contained 110g of pure 18k gold, it was the precious lipstick tube that stole the show. It was studded with 2,500 blue and 1,200 pink diamonds and allowed custom name engraving or even a short message. However, this wasn’t entirely an original idea by H. Couture Beauty.
According to reports, H. Couture Beauty advertised one of their jewel-encrusted lipsticks in the Life & Style Weekly magazine. It was spotted by an anonymous client who, then, placed an order with the now-defunct brand to recreate their signature Socialite lipstick and replace its Swarovski case with a gold and diamond iteration.

Guerlain KissKiss gold and diamond lipstick
Picture
Value: USD 62,000
Trust Guerlain to amp up any makeup collection with exquisite products, and their KissKiss range of the most luxurious lipsticks is the perfect specimen. While the products are currently retailing for about USD 95 each, in 2007, the label launched a special stick worth an astonishing price of USD 62,000.

It was reportedly modelled on the 2005 range designed by Olivier Echaudemaison and Hervé Van Der Straeten and made available in 15 luscious shades. However, once again, it is the stunning case that caused its price to skyrocket.

Crafted out of 110g of 18k gold and studded with 199 diamonds that amounted to 2.2 carats, the lipstick case also allowed customisations with gems such as emeralds and rubies. It was then packed in an elegant black wooden case, while a black suede pouch and lip brush, a Straeten design, accompanied the lot.

Speaking of the KissKiss range, the French brand says, “Naturality and performance come together in ultra-comfortable formulas that take care of lips and adorn them in fresh shades. KissKiss is also a totem object created by designer Hervé Van Der Straeten: a sculpture that nestles in the palm of the hand.”

Dior Rouge Premier lipstick
Picture
Value: USD 500

The Rouge Premier lipstick has extracts of hibiscus and 24-carat gold. It has the smell of rooibos tea and bergamot. The lipstick comes in 12 special-edition shades. One of its unique features is that it is refillable, which is significant given that the case it is housed in is available in limited quantities.

The cylindrical ceramic case which holds the lipstick is covered in Toile de Jouy print as a nod to Christian Dior’s original boutique and Maria Grazia Chiuri. It is just 0.8 mm deep and is as thin as a fingernail. It is made by the 160-year-old French porcelain house Maison Bernardaud.

Bond No.9 with Swarovski Crystals lipstick
Picture
Value: USD 400

Elegant, timeless, exquisite and precious — these words aptly describe this expensive lipstick. Two ranges of red — Nolita and Madison Avenue — each with their own array of shades make it a must-have for any couture moment. Nolita offers a selection of classic retro Hollywood reds while Madison Avenue leans on the more in-vogue stop sign hues. Plus, they are refillable.

Each stick contains a luxurious, high-performance formula fused with the finest high-quality materials and innovative technology. Enclosed within the brand’s iconic gold case, which is studded with hand-applied Swarovski’s ruby fancy stones or crystal clear stones, the Brand No.9 lipsticks are luscious, vibrant and chic.

Christian Louboutin lip trio Coffrete
Picture
Value: USD 300

Redefining presentation, Christian Louboutin retails one of its most expensive lipsticks almost like a piece of jewellery. As the name suggests, the set of three gourmet lipsticks offers three of Christian Louboutin’s Rouge Louboutin shades that were created to complement all skin tones. The Coffret set has the Silky Satin, Velvet Matte and SooooO…Glow versions.

Just like its red heels, the brand has made red lipstick an exquisite treat with the Rouge Louboutin 001M, Rouge Louboutin 001, and Rouge Louboutin 001G colours as the perfect choices.
The three tubes are connected by a gold chain and placed as a stunning necklace.

Guerlain Rouge G Lucky Bee lipstick
Picture
Value: USD 290

In the league of luxury makeup products and expensive lipsticks, Guerlain holds an irrefutable position with exquisite craftsmanship. The Rouge G Lucky Bee lipstick is a fine example.
The expensive lipstick uses a plethora of rich ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and guggul resin, which are known for their lip-plumping properties and keep the lips hydrated and smooth. Jojoba and mango butter offer instant and lasting comfort, while silver microcrystals have a reflective power that creates an intense and luminous colour.

The red 214 lip shade, with a silky satin finish, comes in a majestic double mirror case designed by acclaimed jeweller Lorenz Bäumer. It is adorned with sparkling embellishments transforming your Rouge G lipstick into a piece of couture collectable. It flaunts a large bee motif encrusted by precious rhinestones — an ode to the label’s heritage.

Lipstick lovers can find this piece at Saks Fifth Avenue only.

Chanel 31 Le Rouge
Picture
Value: USD 150 (around AUD 235, CAD 205)

Luxury fashion house Chanel’s beauty segment Chanel Beauty unveiled the gorgeous and expensive lipstick range 31 Le Rouge in September 2023, making it a must-have for those eyeing some deep bold colours.

Ushering in timeless beauty and a long-lasting smooth finish, the refillable lipstick is nothing short of an heirloom piece. The exclusive range takes its name after the iconic address of Chanel’s birthplace — 31 rue Cambon, Paris. The collection has 12 shades that are inspired by the silhouettes of Gabrielle Chanel as well as the ateliers and the apartment of the luxury designer.

Besides the repertoire of the luxury brand and its stunning craftsmanship, there is another reason behind the hefty price tag. “The inspiration began with an extrait de parfum bottle, as well as the N°5 spray with its golden ring and that very CHANEL little “click” you hear when you open and close it,” Sylvie Legastelois, Chanel Beauty director of packaging creation and graphic identity, Sylvie Legastelois told Bougeoir

The faceted glass case is carefully packed in Chanel’s quilted suedette case inspired by the house’s Coco Crush jewellery. The use of Gardenia oil doubles it up as a lip care solution, too.

In the relentless pursuit of flawless, radiant skin, the beauty industry has traversed a vast and varied terrain. From delving into the annals of ancient herbal wisdom to embracing the cutting-edge technology of serums, the quest for the ideal skincare elixir knows no bounds. This ever-evolving industry continually surprises and delights, presenting us with innovative solutions and age-old remedies. However, among these myriad options, one unassuming underwater botanical treasure has captured the attention of skincare enthusiasts and experts alike – sea kelp.

Beneath the glistening surface of the ocean, sea kelp flourishes in a realm of serene majesty. What might appear as a humble aquatic plant conceals within its fronds a wealth of skin-nourishing secrets. As we embark on this exploration, we’ll plunge into the deep blue, immersing ourselves in the world of sea kelp to unveil the reasons behind its meteoric rise as a skincare superstar.

What is sea kelp?
Sea kelp, scientifically known as Macrocystis pyrifera, is a type of large brown seaweed that thrives in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the world’s oceans. It belongs to the family of brown algae and can grow to astonishing lengths, often reaching up to 150 feet. Its remarkable ability to absorb minerals and nutrients from the sea makes it a powerhouse of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Sea Kelp vs Seaweed
Seaweed is a term which can be used to describe many different marine-based species of plants and algae. But sea kelp is more specific. It describes the largest subgroup of seaweed. Seaweed ranges dramatically in size, whilst sea kelp is always quite large.

Benefits of sea kelp for skin
Hydration and moisture retention
It is a natural humectant, which means it can attract and retain moisture. When used in skincare products, it helps your skin maintain its moisture balance, keeping it hydrated, plump, and youthful. This is especially beneficial for those with dry or dehydrated skin.

Rich in antioxidants
This ingredient is packed with antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E, which protect your skin from the damaging effects of free radicals. These antioxidants help prevent premature ageing, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and leave your skin looking radiant.

Anti-inflammatory properties
Inflammation is at the root of many skin issues, including redness, irritation, and acne. It contains natural anti-inflammatory compounds that can soothe and calm the skin, making it an excellent choice for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Improved skin elasticity
The amino acids in it help promote collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. Regular use of this underwater plant can lead to a more youthful and toned complexion.

Detoxification
It is known for its detoxifying properties. It can help draw out impurities and toxins from your skin, leaving it refreshed and revitalised. This makes it an excellent choice for purifying masks and cleansers.

UV protection
Some studies suggest that it may offer limited UV protection due to its natural compounds, helping to shield your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. However, it should not replace sunscreen but can be used as an additional protective measure.

Brushes Vs Sponges: Which Makeup Tool Is Actually Best For Your Skin? Know From A Dermatologist

Prada Makeup Brushes

Do you ever ponder whether to use a brush or a sponge when doing makeup? Why is there such a fuss about blenders now when there are so many beauty brushes available? How exactly are they different from each other and when should one be used at the time of applying makeup?

Use a brush to apply a product straight from the bottle to your face. Use a sponge to attempt to seamlessly integrate the placed product into the skin. When applying a product to the skin after applying it with a brush, sponges work well.

This is due to the fact that utilising a sponge to pick up a product and apply it to the skin results in significant product waste because sponges absorb the substance and deposit very little of it.

In other words, apply foundation and concealer using a stippling brush where necessary, and then lightly dab a sponge over the face to blend everything together.

The same holds true for blush and highlighter. Use a brush to apply it, but use a sponge to massage it in so that it looks diffused and streak-free. Brushes offer better coverage since their absorption is less and are a good tool for applying foundation or doing their base makeup, according to Dr Aanchal Panth, a dermatologist.

However, the bristles in the brush are brittle which can irritate sensitive or dry skin or the brushes happen to be old and weary.

On the other hand, sponges are much better since they cause less friction and are great for those with sensitive skin. However, they don't absorb much product as compared to brushes. Sponges need to be washed since they are moist after application and become a breeding ground for bacteria. They also take time to dry compared to brushes.

Additionally, make sure to wash the sponges and brushes if you have applied them on acne-prone skin.

5 Ways to Maintain Your Hair Colour

Molton Brown Intense Repairing Hair Mask

The fad for hair color never seems to fade, and we love how each season brings a new hair color trend to us. We have experimented with highlights, dip dye, full colors and under lights, and each of them changes your look for the best. Unfortunately, those new to hair coloring fear that the color might weaken their hair and cause their strands to break. The truth is, hair color does make your hair vulnerable to damage but does that mean you need to get the idea of gorgeously dyed hair out of your head? No siree! There are some dos and don’ts with colored hair care that will ensure your hair stays healthy even after being colored. Read on to know them all.

Tips To Keep Your Haircolor Intact

1. Delay First Wash After Coloring Your Hair As Much As You Can
You should wait for at least two days before you wash your hair after dying it. Due to the hair’s extreme fragility immediately following dyeing, over washing might cause the color to fade more quickly.

2. Use Suitable Hair Masks
Treating your hair before coloring can help strengthen and nourish your strands to absorb the dye well. Make sure you nurture your hair strands with wholesome masks to keep the hair silky and healthy.

3. Protect Your Hair From UV Rays
The Uv rays of the sun are your deadliest enemy because the heat will fade your hair color if you don’t take precautions. So it’s best to cover your hair in big shady hats if you have to go out in the sun with freshly colored hair.

4. Rinse Your Hair With Cool Water
Rinsing with cold water helps maintain hair’s natural shine and vitality. However, the roots of your hair will open when you wash it with hot water, causing dryness and a loss of color. Therefore, make sure you use water of a lesser temperature than what you use to bathe for rinsing your hair.

5. Use Color-Safe Dry Shampoo On Your Hair
Try to limit how often you wash your hair. You may have noticed the color transferring to the water during the washing process. Use a dry shampoo suitable for your hair color on days when you don’t wash it.

Standard Practices That Can Ruin Your Hair

1. Not Using Conditioner
Once you’ve finished coloring your hair, it has to be deeply conditioned immediately. The dyeing procedure causes significant moisture loss in your locks. Lack of conditioner causes hair to dry, lose color, and look dull.

2. Overusing Heating Tools
Hair dye and styling products both have a detrimental effect on your hair. To top it all, when combined, hair dye and heat styling products can damage your hair beyond repair. For example, using straighteners without heat protectants will cause your hair color to fade in no time. This is because most people set hot irons to 400 degrees, which fades the hair’s color and can even make it lighter.

3. Submerging In Chlorine Pools
Once you have colored your hair, you should only use non-chemical or natural hair products. Since these products are designed to chemically clean your hair color, using them will result in partial or complete loss of color.

Hair coloring has become a popular part of styling hair, and even though natural hair colors are not as effective and long-lasting, they ensure your hair doesn’t lose its strength. Even if you use artificial colors, you need to ensure you care for your hair, so it doesn’t fray or break on its own. So, what is your favorite color when it comes to hair coloring? This Latte Ingredient May Be the Best-Kept Skincare Secret

You likely know the vibrant yellow spice turmeric for brightening your golden milk lattes and go-to Indian dishes like curry or dal. But while it tastes great, it also delivers some major skin benefits.

From ancient Ayurvedic traditions to modern skincare, turmeric has gained significant recognition for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin-enhancing properties. Applying turmeric or products with turmeric to your face can help lighten dark spots, reduce the appearance of fine lines, treat acne, and even brighten skin tone.

To understand the benefits of turmeric and learn ways to incorporate it into your skincare routine, we asked dermatologists all about the wonder spice. Here’s what they had to say.

What Is Turmeric?
This golden spice comes from the curcuma longa or curcuma domestica plant, which is native to South Asia. The plant is part of the ginger family, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Specifically, the spice comes from the plant's root-like section that grows under the soil, called a rhizome. The rhizomes are boiled and dried to make turmeric powder, which is sold on its own and incorporated into many curry powder blends. You can also find whole, fresh turmeric rhizomes at some specialty grocery stores.

Turmeric's Active Compound: Curcumin
Turmeric, which is derived from the root of Curcuma zedoaria, a form of ginger, is native to Southeast Asia. Its active ingredient, curcumin, is what gives it that yellow-orange hue.

Margarita Lolis, M.D., dermatologist and Mohs surgeon says that turmeric has been used for over 4,000 years to heal skin conditions, but its healing properties are not just anecdotal. “Turmeric, specifically curcumin, is actually well studied with prolific scientific evidence backing up its therapeutic benefits in treating skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema as well as hyperpigmentation,” says Dr. Lolis. “Evidence has shown that it exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-neoplastic benefits.”

This is because turmeric naturally speeds up the process of removing dead skin cells to reveal healthy and soft skin, which deeply hydrates and revitalizes the complexion. The spice contains anti-inflammatory enzymes that can combat cell production and reduce uncomfortable or dry skin patches. In fact, a 2016 study showed that turmeric greatly improved the state of several common skin conditions, whether it was ingested or applied topically. Plus, curcumin is also known to be effective against atopic dermatitis.

In terms of its antioxidant capabilities, Dr. Lolis says that turmeric is full of them. “[Turmeric] reduces oxidative stress, repairs the daily wear and tear [of skin] from the environment, protects against skin damage caused by chronic UVB radiation, and promotes wound healing,” she says.

Turmeric has a laundry list of benefits for skin, but here are some of the most compelling, if you're looking to boost your complexion.

Natural Skin Brightener
Perhaps one of turmeric’s best benefits is its ability to brighten the skin. Its natural exfoliating properties can gently remove dead skin cells, which promotes a more even skin tone and smoother texture.

Laura Scott, M.D., F.A.A.D., and owner of Scott & Co. Skin says that turmeric has been found to possess anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness and calm irritation which can lead to an overall brighter complexion. The action of curcumin on markers of oxidative stress revives the skin by increasing the production of hyaluronic acid and enhances the level of skin’s moisture. It also boosts circulation to the skin, providing a healthy glow.

“It functions as an antioxidant combatting free radicals that can contribute to dullness,” says Dr. Scott. “And it also inhibits the production of melanin, which causes hyperpigmentation and dark spots.” One study showed that turmeric helped to decrease hyperpigmentation by up to 14 percent in as little as four weeks.

Acne and Blemish Control
Everyone has bacteria on their skin, but when that bacteria combines with excess oil and dead skin cells, acne can form. And if left untreated, it can spread and worsen. Because turmeric is an antimicrobial, it fights against bacteria, fungus, and yeast, which are common causes of acne, rosacea, folliculitis, and pityrosporum folliculitis (an acne condition that is very difficult to treat), explains Dr. Lolis.

“Its anti-inflammatory properties also help inflammatory acne lesions heal quicker and reduce redness,” she says. That redness can often lead to swelling, inflammation, and discomfort. Turmeric and its anti-inflammatory properties can gently heal and reduce redness by increasing blood flow and cell turnover, speeding up healing and recovery.

And it can even regulate sebum production and balance oil levels, which are key factors in keeping acne breakouts at bay. Dr. Lolis says turmeric works to prevent dead skin cells from clumping together and blocking the sebaceous gland, or your pores, which helps fight congestion and reduces future breakouts. While turmeric has many benefits in reducing redness and acne, there’s no research that shows that it has any effect on pitted or deep acne scars.

Anti-Aging Ingredient
Over the course of our lifetime, our skin naturally loses collagen and elastin. The breakdown of these proteins, combined with decreased cell turnover, contributes to the formation of wrinkles and skin sagging. This type of damage is often seen in the form of photoaging, which can cause deep wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and rough texture.

And if you spend any time outside, unprotected sun exposure to harmful rays only accelerates this. But the good news is turmeric can help. As an anti-aging ingredient, turmeric works by modestly stimulating collagen production, says Dr. Scott. “Turmeric works by improving skin elasticity which inhibits the enzyme elastase, which breaks down elastin in our skin, [and is] one of the factors that give skin its bounce,” she says. “Its antioxidant properties also protect the skin from free radical damage, which can accelerate the aging process.”

And as skin ages, dullness and dryness can be major concerns as well. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits also enhance the skin’s moisture barrier, resulting in a plumper, more hydrated complexion.

Incorporating Turmeric into Your Skincare Routine
Let’s dive into how turmeric can be incorporated into various steps of your skincare regimen.

Use the Actual Spice
Yes, you can use the actual spice to create a DIY face mask at home. “Given its chemical instability, turmeric is best used in a mask or paste form”, says Dr. Lolis. So, try making your own face mask. Combine 1.5 tablespoons of sandalwood powder, a pinch of ground turmeric, and three tablespoons of orange juice, and apply the paste to the face. The orange juice provides fruit acid to clear blemishes, and sandalwood is a natural astringent. Leave on for about 10 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Or you can add a pinch of turmeric to your favorite moisturizer or treatment product, to reap its benefits. Dr. Lolis says that in addition to its instability, turmeric has limited solubility in liquid, so be careful if it is combined with another ingredient in a face oil. Note that turmeric does have the tendency to stain clothing (and your skin) with an orange hue.

Before you start mixing up a mask at home, practice caution. Like anything you put on your skin or ingest, you should make sure it’s safe. Experts recommend using organic, naturally sourced turmeric. Non-organic turmeric can be processed with pesticides, and other chemical additives to artificially enhance its color, flavor, and smell to improve its shelf life.

If you do decide to add turmeric to any of your skincare products, Dr. Scott recommends a patch test before applying it to your full face. “Usually, a spot like the angle of the jaw is safe to try for a day or two to make sure there are no issues,” she says.

And less is more. A pinch of turmeric is all you should be adding to your entire skincare routine.  Just be sure to use an old pillowcase or bed linens or that you don’t mind staining. Alternatively, purified curcumin can be used instead since it's colorless.

In a latte. A golden latte, aka golden milk, is a tasty caffeine-free drink made of milk and turmeric powder. It can be made with dairy or plant-based milk, depending on your preference. You can also drink it cold, or with cocoa powder.

Add it to smoothies. Brighten up your next smoothie (or juice) with a pinch of turmeric. Try it in a simple banana smoothie or make this creamy golden milk smoothie by Minimalist Baker.

Invest in Turmeric-Infused Products
While incorporating ground turmeric into your skin care products is a great option, there are plenty of wonderful products on the market that contain the skin-boosting ingredient. Dr. Scott prescribes patients who suffer from acne and rosacea a combo with a ceramide and turmeric base. She uses the SkinMedicinals compounding pharmacy for this and recommends meeting with a licensed skin professional if you think you are struggling with any specific skin condition.

Is Chic Hand Soap the Ultimate Symbol of Quiet Luxury?

9/28/2023

Picture

Aesop Aromatique Hand Wash

These stealth wealth status symbols are tucked away in your bathroom, never being seen by the outside world. And that's part of their appeal.

If quiet luxury is all about refined minimalism and elevated yet understated basics, perhaps no place holds more stealth wealth gems than your bathroom. The most intimate and private room of your abode is likely home to your most frequently used, holy grail beauty, grooming and personal care products. And just like a nondescript black baseball cap or a well-tailored suit, these items can say a lot about you. (Quietly, of course.)

In fact, interest in personal care products is at an all-time high. While the pandemic was a major blow to makeup sales, other beauty categories — like oral care, skincare and hand soap — saw significant growth. At the time, the reasoning for this growth was clear (hello, we were stuck at home with nothing to do but wash our hands all day long), but in today’s post-pandemic world, the personal care category’s continued success is more surprising. Just this past April, L’Oréal Group acquired the king of chic hand soap, Aesop, in a massive deal that valued the skin- and body-care brand at a staggering $2.5 billion.

And it’s not just sales figures. Culturally, soap et al. are having a bit of a moment, too. Take, for example, the popular TikTok trend where creators sneak into their dates’ bathroom cabinets to rate (and read into) the type of soap, personal care, hair and body products they find. Too high-end and he might have a girlfriend. Too many run-of-the-mill products and he may not be into self-care. Hardly any personal care products at all? Run. (It’s a fine line.)

But wait — when did Gen Z become such hand soap and toothpaste connoisseurs? The newfound obsession could have something to do with the fact that we’re in the age of GRWM videos and the contents of creators’ bathrooms are constantly on display. Who wouldn’t want to show off a recently acquired taste for chic hand soap? Maybe it’s the Sofia Richie Grainge glow-up effect. Or perhaps we’re all longing to recreate what we imagine Shiv Roy‘s brushing, flossing and hand-washing routine to be.

What we know for sure is that when it comes to true stealth wealth, no other category does it quite as quietly as chic hand soap (and its close cousins, elevated oral care and luxe bathroom spray). These items are tucked away in your bathroom, never being seen by the outside world. And yet you know they’re waiting, in understated packaging, to greet you each evening to help you strip away the remnants of a long day with a wash, brush, floss and a spritz.
Perhaps quiet luxury lies not in GRWM videos, but in the get un-ready with me process when all is said and done.

3 everyday uses for lavender in your home

9/27/2023

Comments

Picture
Lavender has a delicate, sweet smell that is floral, herbal, and evergreen woodsy at the same time. It has soft, powdery, or smokey notes as well. Some lavenders have a more medicinal camphor smell that is closer to the balsamic resin scent of rosemary.

In addition to its wonderful fragrance, lavender has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and antidepressant properties. There are several ways to use lavender. Jane Griffiths reveals three everyday uses for this pretty shrub.

Lavender Growing Tips
A native of the Mediterranean, this hardy perennial likes full sun. Although is drought tolerant, it adapts well to a range of climates. It flowers nearly all year round, attracting many beneficial insects with its fragrant purple spears, while its strong-smelling leaves repel aphids, whiteflies and other harmful insects. It is also a rodent repellent, and if rats are a problem, a lavender hedge around a vegetable garden is a good deterrent.

Grow lavender from seed in seed trays or purchase seedlings. It dislikes being damp, and if its roots are constantly wet, it could die. Plant it in well-drained soil with plenty of space for air to circulate. Prune in early spring, cutting back about 8cm of growth. If you cut the flowers regularly, it will keep producing more.

When & Where to Plant Lavender
Light: Lavender needs full sun and well-drained soil to grow best. In hot summer climates, afternoon shade may help them thrive.

Soil: Lavender grows best in low to moderately-fertile soils, so don't amend the soil with organic matter before planting. Lavender performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Add lime to raise the soil pH to around 7.0 - we recommend performing a simple soil test for best results.

Spacing: Depending on the variety, space plants 1 to 3 feet apart.

Planting Time: In areas colder than Zone 6 (Zone 6-1), we recommend planting in spring or early summer. In areas warmer than zone 6 (7-10), we recommend planting in early fall so the roots can get established during the cool, moist winter weather.

How To Care For Lavender Plants
  • Growth Habit: Lavender grows into a round, bushy shrub in warmer climates. It's a lower-growing perennial in colder climates. In humid climates, allow space for adequate airflow to prevent fungus or powdery mildew. Look at the varieties you're growing to determine their mature size.
  • Staking: Lavender plants range from 1 to 3 feet tall and wide and do not require staking.
  • Watering: Water young plants well. Once established, lavender is drought tolerant and doesn't need frequent watering. Over-watering is a common cause of stress to lavender plants.
  •  Fertilizing: When it come to fertilizer, less is more with Lavender - as with watering. You should not need to feed your lavender plants.
  • Mulching: Since lavender is drought tolerant, it shouldn't need mulch to conserve soil moisture, other than extreme cases. If you do mulch, use small sized bark or gravel, and be sure to leave several inches clear around the plant crown, or your Lavender may rot. Light-colored gravel or sand mulch can help with drainage and keeping the soil and plant warm.
  • Trimming and Pruning: Lavender flowers in summer. The flower stalks can be harvested and used fresh or dried. Even if you aren't harvesting lavender flowers to use, deadhead (cut off) spent blossoms after the flowers fade to spruce up the plant and stimulate a second flowering. Lavender is a woody plant. It produces its best and most fragrant foliage and flowers from young stems. Prune 2-year and older plants in spring, cutting the woody stems back by one-third. This will stimulate new growth, which produces better foliage and flowering.

Bring the water to the boil, add the soapwort and lavender and cover. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Strain and add the essential oil. Use immediately or store in the fridge for up to a week.

2. AIR FRESHENER
This refreshing mixture will clear a room of tobacco smoke, cooking odours and other stale smells.

Ingredients
1Ѕ cups apple cider vinegar
1T rose water
3 drops each lavender, coriander, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils

Method
Mix the ingredients together and seal in a sterilised bottle. Heat a few teaspoons in an oil burner as required.

3. SCOURING PASTE
This fresh-smelling paste can be used to clean stubborn dirt and stains from baths and counters. Rub on and leave for 10 minutes before scrubbing off. It also works well for cleaning grubby hands and feet after gardening.

Ingredients
1 cup water
1 cup natural soap
small block pumice
1T dried lavender flowers, crushed
10 drops tea tree essential oil
10 drops lemon grass essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil

Method
Heat the water until it’s boiling and add the soap. Reduce the heat and stir until the soap has melted. Remove from the heat and stir often as it cools and thickens into a smooth paste. If necessary, add more water. Wrap the pumice in an old cloth and crush it using a hammer. Grind it to a fine powder in a pestle and mortar. Add the pumice powder, lavender flowers and essential oils to the soap mix and stir through. Store in a wide-mouthed container.

End of Season Lavender Care
In the northern limit of its range, mulching Lavender plants in late fall will protect them from the winter's cold. Pile wood chips or bark mulch on the plants after a freeze. This will inflate them from the cold, but not cause them to rot. Remove the mulch in early spring.

Anti-aging properties of seaweed revealed

South Australian brown seaweeds could hold the key to preventing the deterioration of collagen and elastin in human skin, according to a new study which showed the potential of the seaweed extracts for use in cosmetic ‘anti-aging’ products.

South Australia has a remarkably high diversity of seaweeds, with up to 1500 described species, of which approximately 62 percent are endemic to the region.

Seeking to exploit this high species diversity, a new study, conducted by a Flinders University research group, evaluated the anti-aging qualities of extracts from three South Australian seaweeds - Ecklonia radiata, Cystophora moniliformis, and Cystophora siliquosa.

The researchers found extracts of South Australian brown seaweed to increase collagen levels in the skin, and protect against the deterioration of both collagen and elastin - proteins which contribute to the structure of skin.

“Collagen acts as a building block for bones, teeth, muscles, skin, joints and connective tissue, while elastin gives skin its elasticity and strength – and both these proteins are popularly promoted by the beauty industry as essential for the appearance of healthy skin,” said Professor Wei Zhang, a member of the research team that conducted the study, in an announcement from the university.

Professor Zhang emphasised that the research found extracts from SA’s brown seaweed which not only stimulated the growth of collagen, but also inhibited a process called glycation, which leads to the deterioration of collagen and elastin.

“So far anti-glycation agents haven’t been strong enough to have a major impact on anti-aging, so our discovery is really exciting as we can see the potential to develop stronger anti-glycation extracts from brown seaweed,” he explained.

“Our findings will help to fill knowledge gaps and sustainably develop brown seaweed advancement in topical and supplement skincare products. A patent has been filed and the team is looking for investors and industry partners to collaborate for further commercialisation,” Zhang added

The Battle for Pierre Cardin's Legacy: A Family Feud Over Fashion Empire

9/26/2023

Picture
Fashion designer Pierre Cardin died in December 2020 at the age of 98. He had no children. During his life he created a million-dollar empire and among other belongings he left real estate in Paris and the south of France, including a 350 million mansion and the castle of the Marquis de Sade. Nearly three years after his death, his heirs are still locked in a war over his estate.

Born in Italy under the name of Pietro Costante Cardin, at just 23 he moved to Paris, where he developed one of the longest and most successful careers in French haute couture. He had an innate talent for business: he created his own brand, expanded his franchises in different countries and put his name on all kinds of garments and accessories available to the masses.

From his inheritance, in addition to the holding company, subsidiaries, licenses and brands, he left incredible properties such as the futuristic Palais Bulles mansion on the French Riviera that was for sale for 350 million euros (1,200 square meters, amphitheater for 500 people, swimming pools, gardens, 10 suites, incredible views of the French Riviera); the castle of the Marquis de Sade in Lacoste in the south of France where dance and music recitals are held; and the palazzo Bragadin in Venice, decorated with masterpieces by Pietro Longhi, the great master of 18th-century high society. In the world of leisure, he owned the Maxim's restaurant and hotel chain, for which he received a purchase offer of 2,500 million euros in 2016.

When he passed away, everything pointed to the fact that the lucky one to keep it all would be his nephew, the architect Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin, who became the group's general manager in 2018 and then president in 2020. The designer came with him on his last visit to Spain, in January 2017, to present her play La belleza no tiene piedad at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Basilicati, who says he has worked for nearly 25 years alongside his great-uncle, wants to "respect the wishes of Pierre Cardin, preserve his empire and defend his image."

Confronting him are his cousins, also Cardin's great-nieces, who accuse him of wanting to "recover all the individual assets of Pierre Cardin and the group through dubious and possibly fraudulent maneuvers," his lawyer Jean-Louis Rivière told AFP. They want the group to be sold and denounce "an attempt to steal inheritance" by Basilicati.

According to Rivière, most of the Cardin family would be on the women's side. The group's assets are estimated at between 750 and 800 million euros, according to the purchase proposals, according to the lawyer.

One of the key points of the battle is in an alleged will signed by Pierre Cardin in November 2016 that designates Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin as sole heir. Curiously, it was he who found that document in 2022 in the Parisian building of his great-uncle. A "timely" finding after a purchase offer from the group with which "85% of the heirs agree," says the lawyer Rivière. The validity of that will is under investigation by a civil court in Paris.

But the battle between the two parties has reached the criminal field. The Paris prosecutor's office opened an investigation in March following a complaint filed by Cardin's great-nieces for abuse of weakness, aggravated breach of trust and fraud. This demand is added to a previous one, which was rejected in June, and two others that are being analyzed; one for breach of trust and forgery, and another for fraud and breach of trust.

In one of the lawsuits, the great-nieces question how Basilicati-Cardin took control of the holding company days after their great-uncle's death. Her doubts revolve around the validity of the act of transfer of the shares that her grandmother Giovanna Cardin should have signed, days before her death in March 2000 at the age of 97.

Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin countered on June 21 with a libel suit. "Some members of the family, who do not accept that Pierre Cardin appointed me to succeed him, increase their procedures and try to mobilize the press with false accusations whose only objective is to harm me and affect the group," says Basilicati-Cardin.

Under the impetus of Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin, the Pierre Cardin company returned last March to the official women's ready-to-wear calendar in Paris after 25 years of absence. "In the end, Pierre Cardin gave me important advice on his vision of the brand and that is a treasure that I want to develop," says Basilicati-Cardin.

Makeup is a fantastic way to enhance your features and boost your confidence. Whether you're a makeup enthusiast or just starting out, there are a few key points to keep in mind to achieve the best results. From choosing the right products to applying them with finesse, let's delve into the world of makeup application step by step.

Choosing the Right Makeup Products
Selecting the right makeup products lays the foundation for a flawless look. Here's how to get started:

Consider Your Skin Type
Before you begin, determine your skin type - oily, dry, combination, or sensitive. This will help you choose products that suit your skin's unique needs.

Quality Over Quantity
Invest in high-quality makeup products. They not only provide better coverage but also last longer and are less likely to cause skin irritations.

Go for a Makeup Primer
Using a makeup primer creates a smooth canvas for your makeup application, helping it last longer and appear more polished.

Preparing Your Face
Proper preparation sets the stage for flawless makeup application. Follow these steps:

Cleanse and Moisturize
Start with a clean face. Gently cleanse and moisturize your skin before applying any makeup products.

Apply Sunscreen
If your makeup look involves going out, apply sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Use a Concealer
Apply a concealer to cover blemishes, dark circles, and uneven spots. This creates an even base for your foundation.

Applying Makeup Step by Step
Now that you're prepped and ready, let's dive into the actual makeup application:

Foundation Application
Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone. Apply it evenly using a makeup sponge or brush. Blend it well into your skin, especially at the jawline.

Accentuate Your Eyes
Your eyes are a focal point. Apply eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara to enhance their beauty. Experiment with different colors and styles.

Define Your Brows
Well-defined eyebrows frame your face. Use an eyebrow pencil or powder to shape and fill in your brows naturally.

Blush and Contour
Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks for a healthy glow. Use a contour shade to define your cheekbones and jawline.

Lip Color
Choose a lip color that complements your overall look. Use a lip liner to define the edges and prevent feathering.

Finishing Touches
The final touches ensure your makeup stays in place and looks flawless:

Set with Setting Spray
A setting spray locks in your makeup, keeping it fresh and vibrant throughout the day.

Check for Balance
Stand back and assess your makeup in natural light. Ensure that all elements are balanced and blended. Mastering the art of makeup application takes practice and patience. Remember, makeup is about enhancing your natural beauty and expressing yourself. By choosing the right products and following these steps, you'll create stunning looks that boost your confidence and leave you feeling fabulous.

On July 1st, 2023, Burberry welcomed a new women's fragrance into its range of fragrances. Advertised as a "gourmand aromatic," BURBERRY GODDESS features notes of vanilla and a smidgen of lavender.

My initial goal for Burberry Goddess was to expand upon the common use of vanilla to deliver a new kind of rich olfactive experience. For this purpose, I used three distinct types of vanilla extraction. The first is a Vanilla Infusion, which provides the brightest, woody vanilla possible. Then I used Firgood™, also known as "Vanilla Caviar," for the first time in a fragrance. This innovative new ingredient adds a sweet, rich and animalic vanilla. Lastly, Vanilla Absolute is darker and richer, enhancing the fragrance with a mysterious, milky aspect.

Burberry Goddess also marks Burberry’s first-ever refillable fragrance, and the bottle boasts an elegant design. The gabardine-inspired gold label on the outer casing references Burberry’s long-standing heritage, whilst the archive-inspired bottle is modernized with a gold medallion.

Facial Oils: For Every Skin Type And Why You Should Start Using One ASAP

9/22/2023

Comments

Picture
They’ve been popping all over your Instagram feed and Sephora shelves for quite some time now. Turns out, facial oils are totally worth the hype. Sure, it’s an extra step to add to your daily beauty regimen, but the benefits are well worth the effort.

“Our body produces oil naturally, but as we age that production decreases significantly,” says Ling Chan, celebrity facialist. “The skin needs oil to maintain a healthy balance, otherwise, it gets too dry which can cause breakouts, fine lines, and wrinkles. Using a facial oil helps keep moisture in the skin while protecting it from the environmental damage,” she explains.

Plus, they work with every skin type (yes, even if you have oily or blemish-prone skin).

So, what kind of facial oil should you choose?

Look for oils with a smaller molecular size, like argan, squalane and jojoba oils. “If the molecular structure of an oil is too big, it can’t penetrate through the top layer of the skin,” says Chan. Lighter oils will sink into skin quickly without clogging the pores.

Also, “you have to consider your skin type when purchasing a facial oil,” says Dr. Debra Jaliman, NYC-based cosmetic dermatologist and author of Skin Rules. In addition, look for oils bottled in dark glass as exposure to light and heat will damage the oil. And lastly, “choose a facial oil where water is not the first ingredient,” she adds.

Here is a guide to help you pick the best facial oil, according to your skin type:
  • For Dry Skin: “Marula oil is great for reducing redness and hydrating dry and irritated skin. It’s not heavy so you won’t feel greasy. This oil is also rich in omega fatty acids,” says Dr.Jaliman. Coconut and squalane oils are also suitable for this skin type. “If you have dry skin, a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid in conjunction with a facial oil would work well. Hyaluronic acid plumps the skin and replenishes any moisture loss,” notes the skin maven.
  • For Normal Skin: Avoid using oils that are are too heavy. Squalane, jojoba and marula oils are your best bet. Take a few drops of the facial oil and mix it with your moisturizer before application.
  • For Acne-Prone Skin: “Breakouts happen due to overactive oil glands, so using a healthy supplemental oil such as squalane, diminishes your own oil production,” says Chan. “Most people with acne try to dry their skin out, which is one of the worst things you can do. Acne is your skin’s way of telling you that your oil to water ratio is off balance,” she adds. Opt for lighter oils like Jojoba, squalane and tea tree oils. “These facial oils contain ingredients that can kill acne-causing bacteria and help slough off dead skin cells,” notes Dr. Jaliman.
  • For Oily Skin: “Jojoba, tea tree, squalane and marula oils are good for people with oily skin. They are light in texture and don’t make the skin greasy”, says the dermatologist. Other low-comedogenic oils like Argan, Buckthorn, Kukui and rosehip are also safe options. “A moisturizer with alpha hydroxy acid is a good choice to use along with a facial oil, if you have oily skin,” she adds.
  • For Combination Skin: Marula oil works great for combination skin. “It has anti-bacterial properties and quickly penetrates into the skin,” says Dr. Jaliman. Use the oil sparingly along with a  lightweight moisturizer.
  •  For All Skin Types: “Squalane is derived from olives and because its molecules are very small, it can be easily absorbed and has amazing benefits for all skin types,” tells Chan.
  • For Anti-Aging Benefits: Try Origins Plantscription Youth-Renewing Face Oil which has the goodness of 20 skin rejuvenating oils including Argan, Rose, Sunflower, Sweet Almond and Raspberry oils.

Now that you know which facial oil to use, here are a few quick tips on how to incorporate it into your beauty routine:

  • Start by washing and gently exfoliating the skin.
  • Add a few drops of facial oil to your moisturizer or apply the oil and layer it with a lightweight moisturizer, suggests Dr. Jaliman.
  • Massage it using a sweeping upward motion.
  • Also, you can use it under your SPF in the morning or blend 2-3 drops with your foundation while applying makeup.

It’s important to note that both moisturizer and facial oil are equally important when it comes to maintaining a healthy, hydrated skin. “The skin needs 70% water and 30% oil to maintain its balance.

Neither a facial oil nor a moisturizer can deliver water. If they are used without a hydrator, they actually create a barrier against hydration which will cause the skin to break out,” Chan explains. “An oil helps the skin retain the water that’s put into it, and the moisturizer acts as the protectant against free radicals, sun, and environmental toxins,” adds the facial guru.

How To Add Gua Sha To Your Beauty Routine According To A Top Esthetician

Sisley Paris Gingko Gua Sha

Gua Sha. By now, you’ve probably read about it. Or watched a TikTok tutorial. Or perhaps you’ve tried a swipe of the nifty, tooth-shaped gua sha tool. So, what exactly is it — and what’s all the fuss all about?

Hailing from Chinese medicine, gua sha (meaning ‘scrape sand’) has been used for centuries to help “facilitate the return to balanced equilibrium in the body and in the tissues,” said Austin-based holistic esthetician Britta Plug. In fact, the technique was originally used “to reduce fevers and alleviate aches,” said Plug, who has over 20 years of experience.

These days, gua sha seems to be all the rage. Having gained popularity in the West, it’s light, gentle and effective. And while learning requires some practice (and patience), the sole goal remains: to move stagnation out of the tissue “so that the flow of blood, lymph and qi can be restored,” said Plug.

So does gua sha really work? Yes! Below, Plug shares the benefits (you can also follow @Brittabeauty for in-depth tutorials and tips).

  1. A clearer, brighter complexion – when waste backs up in the tissue, skin looks dull, congested and breakout prone. Restoring flow brings a lit from within glow while also reducing congestion as the lymphatic system is encouraged to move waste out of the area.
  2. Sculpting and firming – excess fluids can accumulate in the tissues, when we start to move those along lymphatic pathways the result is a more sculpted and toned face.
  3. Tension Release – gua sha can help release tension and worries from our face as we gently encourage our muscles of expression to relax.
  4. Fine lines and wrinkle reduction – all of the above help to smooth out and plump up lines and wrinkles.

Facial Gua Sha Basics (Hint: Don’t Sweat the Technique)
Psssstt: it breaks down to direction, angle and pressure. “We work zone by zone, starting with the neck and shoulders, opening the flow and releasing — and working up the face,” Plug said. This allows fluids a chance to drain and unwinds tension from larger muscle groups (before you target smaller facial muscles). “You’ll want a light oil layer for slip and glide” she said. In fact, Plug prefers an oil for absorbing moisturizers and moving the stone smoothly over the skin.

Direction
For the neck, Plug typically works down to drain and depuff and up to lift. On the face, she works from the center out to the edge of the face. On the forehead, you can work outwards or upwards.

Angle
Keep the stone fairly flat. “You want to feel a lot of surface area in contact with the skin,” Plug said. Instinctively, folks might hold the tool perpendicular “but you won’t get nearly the same level of results this way,” she quips. Exception: holding the tool as you see fit for the the back of the neck and shoulders.

Pressure
Lighter and slower than you think. “Think of frosting a cake. Close your eyes and tune into the sensations. It should feel incredibly soothing,” said Plug who mentions practicing 3-10 passes on each area.

“With consistent practice over time, this can change how your face ages,” added Plug, suggesting 10 minutes per day, 3 or more times weekly will begin to create and maintain shifts. The result? “The skin will be more vibrant, and face shape more true to your essence,” said Plug.

Also: slow, gentle movements on the face help you enter “the rest, digest and repair of the parasympathetic nervous system,” added Plug. You can also “work the soft area behind the angle of the jaw, near the ear,” Plug said, pointing to where the all-important vagus nerve passes through. “Stimulating the vagus nerve helps the body to move into the parasymathetic nervous system,” she said.

While its known to be safe and gentle, Plug advises avoiding gua sha on inflamed skin (i.e., sunburn, acne, rosacea) and filler injections. Similarly, don't use over fresh botox; waiting at least a few weeks for it to settle. Pregnant? Use light very pressure — and skip the tops of the shoulders. Any other concerns? Talk to your doctor.

Stretch Marks: Why They Appear And How To Get Rid Of Them

9/21/2023

Comments

Picture
Stretch marks are a type of scar to the skin, sometimes referred to as "striae" by doctors. They are caused by a tear in the dermis, or the deeper layer of skin, often from abrupt stretching of the tissue. This rupture of the collagen and elastin leaves a permanent scar when it heals, and from the surface, this develops into a visible stretch mark as we know it.

When they first appear, stretch marks are very dark in color, often purple or red. They can be raised above the skin and slightly puffy and itchy. The good news is that the appearance of stretch marks improves with time. Over a year, the color fades from red to a pale color, and the marks flatten or appear slightly depressed below the level of the surrounding skin.

Who is at risk for stretch marks?
Everyone has the capacity to develop stretch marks, but those with extreme hormone levels (such as pregnant women) or individuals with a family history of stretch marks may be more susceptible. I have heard many women call them their "tiger stripes," a physical representation of just what their abdomen did to accommodate their growing baby.

Outside of pregnancy, many teens develop stretch marks during puberty in response to their growing and changing body. Extreme muscle building and fluctuations in body weight may also cause stretch marks to appear as the body contour changes. The prolonged use of some medications which can thin the skin, like corticosteroids, may also cause stretch marks to appear.

Stretch Marks Causes and Risk Factors
Stretch marks happen when your body grows quickly for any reason. Your skin can’t stretch enough to keep up.

Collagen is a protein that makes your skin more elastic. If your skin doesn’t have enough, the marks may show up as it stretches.
You may get stretch marks because of:
  • Quick weight gain (this affects both men and women)
  • Childhood growth spurts during puberty. Make sure kids know this is normal and that childhood marks may fade as they get older.
  • Pregnancy as a result of stretched skin and a surge in hormones that weakens skin fibers. They might fade as you shed pounds after the baby is born.
  • Breast implant surgery
  • Bodybuilding, even those who have little fat can get them where their muscles bulge
  • High amounts of steroids, either from steroid medications or illnesses like Cushing's syndrome
  • Marfan syndrome, a genetic disease that weakens your skin fibers and causes unusual growth
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a group of conditions that result from genetic changes to collagen, a protein in your body

They also run in families.

Stretch Mark Symptoms
New stretch marks may feel slightly raised and itchy. These rippled, streaky lines in your skin come in different colors. They fade from red or pink to purplish-blue to thinner, pale, more scar-like streaks over time. You may not notice them as much.

They can show up on many parts of your body:
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Breasts
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Shoulders
  • Stomach or torso

How can you get rid of stretch marks?
Retinoids sink into your skin to speed up cell turnover, causing your body to churn out fresher, smoother, less wrinkled skin over time,” dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, previously told Cosmo. Which is why they’re the best over-the-counter treatment for smoothing bumpy, textured stretch marks at home. Just massage a dot of retinoid over your stretch marks one night a week for one week, then two nights a week for two weeks, then three nights a week for three weeks, slowly working your way up to every other night indefinitely. It’ll take a while to see results (think: three months, at least), but it is a simple addition to your routine and one that’s available at drugstores.

Is there anything you can do to prevent stretch marks?
The quick answer to this question is maybe. Keeping the skin well hydrated and avoiding excessive weight gain may be your only chance to prevent permanent damage to the skin. While research has yet to find the perfect product to prevent stretch marks, controlling changes to our body and weight may be our best bet to keep our skin looking healthy and smooth.

Stretch Mark Treatments and Home Remedies
A range of medical treatments and home remedies is available to treat your stretch marks. Some work better than others.

Medical treatment for stretch marks
A skin doctor or plastic surgeon can use lasers or other treatments to help fade the marks. It may help your skin make more collagen:
  • Pulsed dye laser therapy is a painless blast of light used on new, red stretch marks. The light’s energy calms blood vessels under your skin that could cause the marks.
  • Fractional CO2 laser therapy is a new treatment that may smooth out old, white stretch marks. One study showed that women’s stretch marks faded after five sessions compared to others who used topical creams with glycolic acid and tretinoin.
  • Excimer laser therapy exposes stretch marks to targeted ultraviolet B (UVB) light. A small study shows that it’s safe and treatments over 1 to 4 months can correct pigment problems from stretch marks.
  • Microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to rub off the top layer of your skin. One new study showed that this treatment helped fade new, reddish stretch marks when combined with skin peels.
  • Chemical peelis an acidic solution that burns off the top layers of your skin to remove dead and damaged cells and boost new skin growth. This treatment may improve your stretch marks a little, but won’t completely get rid of them.
  • Radiofrequency uses radio wave energy to create heat and trigger your body to make collagen. One small study found this treatment is safe and can improve stretch marks, but scientists need to do more research.
  • Ultrasound works a lot like radiofrequency treatments. The procedure sends sound waves deep into your skin to heat and tighten and jumpstart collagen production.

Are there any surgical options?
If your stretch marks are on your lower abdomen after pregnancy, you are in luck. Stretch marks that are below your belly button can be surgically removed in a tummy tuck procedure. This surgery removes the skin below the belly button permanently and uses the upper skin to create a tighter abdomen and a smoother appearance.

It is important to meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss realistic expectations with this type of surgery, and to understand how this type of surgery will remove damaged skin and relocate upper stretch marks to a more hidden location near the bikini line.

Home remedies for stretch marks
You’ll find many creams, salves, oils, and other skin ointments that claim to either prevent or treat them. But there’s little proof that any of these products really work. Some treatments and home remedies can fade or hide stretch marks:
  • Body makeup and self-tanner: These products can help hide stretch marks. Note that tanning won’t get rid of stretch marks. It actually makes them easier to see.
  • Tretinoin: Creams with tretinoin (Retin-A) contain retinoid, a compound related to Vitamin A. Retinoids increase collagen production. They’re often used to treat wrinkles. They may help fade newer stretch marks, but they can also make your skin red, irritated, or scaly.
  • Collagen boosters: StriVectin-SD and lupin seed extracts are both supposed to increase collagen in your skin, but it’s hard to say if they’ll fade or prevent stretch marks.
  • Centella asiatica:This herbal oil boosts cells in your body that make collagen and build up skin tissue. Some people use it to help heal wounds. Centella asiatica is in a number of over-the-counter skin creams for stretch marks, but there’s little proof it helps to fade them.
  • Bitter almond oil: One study showed that women who massaged bitter almond oil into the skin on their bellies during pregnancy had fewer stretch marks than others who just used oil without massage.
  • Cocoa butter, shea butter, olive oil, vitamin E oil, and other moisturizers: These natural creams can make your skin feel softer, but it isn’t clear if they help or prevent stretch marks.

If you decide to try a cream, lotion, or gel to fade your stretch marks, be sure to use it every day for several weeks. Take the time to massage it into your skin. These products may work best on newer stretch marks.

Lavender Season in Provence
Lavender flowers typically bloom from the end of June through August, peaking in the middle of July. Lavender is a huge export in Provence, and Provençal lavender products, like soap, sachets, and even candy can be purchased year round. Lavender, which is harvested in September and dried to maintain its intense fragrance and flavor, can be used throughout the year in cooking to instantly evoke the smells and tastes of summer.

What Are Peptides And What Do They Do For Your Skin?

The term peptides may sound familiar, but you may not know much about this skin care ingredient. We’ve covered conventional ones, like hyaluronic acid and retinol, and have gotten you up-to-date on the latest trends, such as mushrooms and onions, but now it’s time to consider what a peptide serum can do for your skin. Whether you’ve heard of them or not, there’s a solid chance you don’t know what peptides are or what they do, and we think you should. Keep reading to learn what you need to know about the numerous benefits peptides can have on skin.

WHAT ARE PEPTIDES?
First thing’s first, you may be wondering what peptides are made of. Well, let’s start with a little science lesson. A study from the Molecular Diversity Preservation International (MDPI) states that peptides are short amino acid chains that occur naturally in your body. Simply put, these peptides play a large role in the appearance of your skin, as well as other areas of your body. The peptides used in skin care products, as you can likely guess, are synthetic peptides. According to the MDPI study, many short, stable, and synthetic peptides have been developed and continue to be studied to understand their roles in extracellular matrix synthesis, pigmentation, and inflammation.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PEPTIDES FOR SKIN?
If you’re still not quite sure why people are using peptide serum formulas and find yourself asking what the benefits of using peptides are, allow us to break down some of the benefits or peptides that have been studied as it relates to skin care.

PEPTIDES SKIN CARE BENEFIT #1: ELASTICITY
Certain peptides could help your skin’s elasticity. Copper peptide is commonly used in skin care products for this reason. According to the Cleveland Clinic, copper peptide is often referred to as the most effective when it comes to improving the appearance of skin. Studies have shown that it can help promote collagen and elastin production, per the Cleveland Clinic, which helps to firm the look of skin in less time than most other anti-aging skin care products. Additionally, according to a study in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) library, research shows that there was an improvement in participants’ skin appearance after 12 weeks of taking supplements containing collagen peptides.

PEPTIDES SKIN CARE BENEFIT #2: MINIMIZE THE LOOK OF WRINKLES
Another anti-aging benefit, peptides have been found to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The MDPI study found that those using a formulation containing palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 (a synthetic peptide) over a 12-month period experienced a reduction in the appearance of facial wrinkles. Other peptides have also been studied for their similar effects. Per the same study, it has also been found that trifluoroacetyl-tripeptide-2 can help smooth the look of wrinkles, as does copper tripeptide.

PEPTIDES SKIN CARE BENEFIT #3: SCARRING
Scarring on the skin, including stretch marks, is another skin care concern that peptides could help improve the look of. The Mayo Clinic notes that peptides are used as an ingredient in products to help address the look of stretch marks and other scars on the skin’s surface. However, further research is needed to completely understand the ways peptides work on different skin concerns.

PEPTIDES SKIN CARE BENEFIT #4: FIRMNESS
Peptides can also help to firm the look of skin. The Cleveland Clinic states that studies have shown that copper peptide promotes the production of glycosaminoglycans, such as hyaluronic acid. They help reduce the appearance of photo-damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles by creating smoother and firmer skin, according to the MDPI study.

Editor’s Tip: At night, before applying your peptide-rich moisturizer be sure to cleanse your skin and layer on a hydrating serum to maximize the hydrating and anti-aging benefits while you sleep.

CAN PEPTIDES CAUSE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
When it comes to peptides for skin, the side effects are minimal. According to a study in the NCBI library, a wrinkle treatment formulated with peptides was found to be well-tolerated, with no treatment-related adverse effects reported. So, topicals formulated with peptides, are in the clear. That being said, studies have found there are potential side effects to oral consumption of peptides. If you’re going that route, consult your doctor in advance about possible side effects. Otherwise, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) lists peptides as a recommended skin care ingredient for those looking to tighten sagging skin and smooth the appearance of wrinkles.

Is a face razor safe? Bougeoir asks dermatologists to settle the debate

Tweezerman Facial Razor

Social media is obsessed with a face razor—but is it worth it?

Ask any millennial, who’s grown under the close scrutiny of her mother and she’ll tell you that shaving the body was an act of sacrilege. Shaving the face? Unthinkable. Hair removal equalled waxing and threading that came under the purview of the trusted, local parlour. The perils of shaving included coarser hair, quicker hair growth and rough skin. Cut to 2023 and TikTok and Instagram are rife with tutorials of Gen Z casually using a face razor. With so much confusion around the practice, we decided to get to the bottom of it all.

Myth vs fact
First up, it’s time to address the biggest question—does shaving actually make hair thicker and grow faster? The short answer is no. The long answer is this: “This myth does not have any scientific basis. During shaving, the hair is cut from the skin’s surface, whereas hair regrows from the root deep beneath the skin tissue,” explains Dr Madhuri Agarwal, dermatologist. She adds that hair growth is influenced only by hormones; the only reason it appears to grow thicker is because it’s cut from the surface and grows back in a couple of days. Dr Jaishree Sharad, dermatologist and author adds: “Hair growth is determined by factors such as genetics, hormones, nutrition, and overall health. Shaving does not alter these factors nor stimulate hair growth.”

How safe is face shaving?
The most obvious concerns with shaving are nicks and cuts but Dr Agarwal and Dr Sharad also point out issues like razor burns, follicle infections and ingrowth. According to Dr Akber Aimer, a dermatologist, one also needs to watch out for two other conditions. “Firstly, if you have very sensitive skin, shaving could aggravate some of that sensitivity. Secondly, if you have active acne, shaving could lead to the spreading of the acne bacteria.” This is more so in the case of dry shaving, explains Dr Agarwal as repeatedly scraping dry skin with a razor can lead to inflammation.

The correct technique
The right technique, she continues involves soaking the skin in warm water for a few minutes or taking a shower to soften the skin. “Then, apply a cleanser or shaving foam and do a wet shave. Always shave in the direction of the hair to prevent ingrowth. Shave with gentle strokes and don’t shave the same area more than twice,” she cautions.

It’s a given that you should be gentle during the process—rushing could lead to nicks and cuts.

Dr Sharad recommends using a new blade every time. “Using an old or blunt blade can cause razor bumps and ingrown hair. Disposable razors are preferred. Also, use a generous amount of shaving cream to lubricate the area. Shave in the direction of the hair, holding the razor at a 45-degree angle.”

Interparfums Chief Talks Richemont Brand Licenses, Private Label

Montblanc Explorer and Explorer Platinum

Less than a week after Compagnie Financière Richemont said it is raising the bar on its fragrance beauty business, which resulted in Interparfums SA’s stock sinking 9.4 percent the same day, Interparfums’ chairman and chief executive officer addressed financial analysts and journalists.

Speaking Tuesday morning in the auditorium of Interparfums’ Left Bank Paris headquarters, Philippe Benacin discussed the company’s strong half-year results, the addition of the Lacoste fragrance license to its portfolio and the group’s upcoming private label, among other subjects

But first, he talked about the Richemont news, speculating what a source said on Sept. 7 — that the formation of the Laboratoire de Haute Parfumerie et Beauté seems not to signal that Richemont plans to take its fragrance brands in-house.

Richemont-owned brands with fragrances include Van Cleef & Arpels, Chloé, Dunhill, Alaïa, Boucheron and Montblanc. Interparfums and Coty Inc. are the licensees, while Cartier perfumes are developed in-house.

Montblanc is Interparfums’ largest fragrance brand. In the first half of 2023, Montblanc generated 107.4 million euros of the group’s total sales of 396.1 million euros. Van Cleef is the group’s seventh-largest, ringing up 12.4 million euros, and Boucheron placed ninth, with sales of 9 million euros in the six-month period.

Richemont said on Sept. 7 that the Laboratoire de Haute Parfumerie et Beauté is a platform aimed at scaling the fragrance brands in its portfolio. It named Boet Brinkgreve the division’s CEO. The former Firmenich executive reports to Richemont chairman Johann Rupert.

Brinkgreve is to help the six maisons already involved in fragrance “to reach critical mass in this highly competitive field, where scale is crucial,” Richemont said at the time. The company added the new platform “will leverage resources across our maisons to help develop the most refined creations and promising licenses.”

The Richemont announcement came months after Kering said it had formed an internal beauty division and began taking its fragrance activity back in-house, so that strategy was top of mind for industry experts.

Benacin shared an overview of Interparfums’ Richemont-related fragrance licenses. Montblanc’s was recently extended until 2030, and license renewal discussions with Van Cleef have not yet begun, but should before yearend, according to Benacin.

“We have so many projects for ’25 and ’26 which are underway,” he said, referring to Van Cleef fragrances.

Meanwhile, the status of the Boucheron license, which is currently set to expire at the end of 2025, could not immediately be learned.

In April 2022, New York-based Interparfums Inc., Interparfums SA’s parent company, revealed its fragrance license with Dunhill would expire on Sept. 30.

Interparfums SA very briefly held the Alaïa fragrance license in the past, but that was when the fashion brand’s management was in flux.

Benacin said that for Interparfums today the priority is: “We have an important roadmap that is being put in place.”

The group is concentrating on continuing to generate strong sales throughout the year and on the new 15-year Lacoste license, which begins Jan. 1. That license had previously been held by Coty.
Benacin said it is key to have a fourth brand with high sales, referring also to Montblanc, Jimmy Choo and Coach.

“Today, it’s focus, focus on the existing portfolio, on the renewal of Van Cleef and the relaunch of Lacoste,” he said.

A question was raised about fragrance licenses in the wake of the recent news that Tapestry is acquiring Capri in an $8.5 billion deal. Interparfums is the licensee of fragrance brands Coach and Kate Spade, part of Tapestry, and of fragrance brand Jimmy Choo, part of Capri.

“What will come out of all this? I do not know for the moment,” said Benacin, adding he doesn’t believe that Capri is looking to bring its fragrance brands in-house.

The licenses for Coach, Kate Spade and Jimmy Choo are not due to end anytime soon.

Licenses aside, for the last nine months, Interparfums has been working on its own private label.
“We expect the launch to be in January ’25,” said Benacin, who kept mum on further details.

Interparfums reported net income in the first half of 2023 rose 43 percent year-on-year to 77.6 million euros, representing 19.6 percent of sales. Operating profit came in at 102.2 million euros, a 42 percent gain.

The company observed slowdowns in some geographic markets during the summer months, but nonetheless maintained its annual sales target of around 800 million euros for full-year 2023.
Interparfums stock closed down 0.9 percent to 52.60 euros on the Paris bourse Tuesday

The Healing Power of Avène’s Thermal Spring Water-Based Skincare

Picture
Nestled in the serene foothills of the south of France, the small, picturesque town of Avène is synonymous with its thermal spring water, revered for centuries due to its healing properties. The spring’s discovery dates back to 1736, when a local horse with alopecia was cured after rolling in the water daily. The spring’s therapeutic reputation spread across continents; after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, water was shipped to aid burn victims. Today, more than 150 clinical and pharmacological studies attest to its effectiveness.

The thermal waters experience
Now, people around the world travel to “Avène-les-bains” to experience the water’s therapeutic benefits, and the thermal spring has been transformed into a vast hydrotherapy centre, owned by Pierre Fabre Laboratories. Covered by the French health-care system, the centre welcomes thousands of visitors annually who seek relief from skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema, burns, acne and atopic dermatitis. The centre’s three-week treatment includes daily baths, showers, massages and instructional sessions, with nurturing and well-trained staff.

The water’s unique journey infuses it with curative powers, verified through an analysis in collaboration with Sorbonne University. Rainwater undergoes a 50-year filtration process through the Cévennes mountains, where it is suffused with pH-balancing elements, minerals and, most importantly, Aquaphilus dolomiae—a special bacteria with anti-inflammatory properties.
Picture
Geneviève Dion, a 55-year-old communications professional from Montreal who suffers from severe eczema, has visited the centre for treatment several times, after finding little relief at the dermatologist’s office. “I was amazed by my results—not only by my skin and the relief I felt from their water treatments, but also just the support and care from their staff. I genuinely felt like someone understood what I was going through for the first time,” she says of her stay, which included consultation with an on-site dermatologist. “Being able to put my health first through these treatments has been incredible.”

Skincare inspired by Avène’s waters
In 1990, the Pierre Fabre Group launched Eau Thermale Avène, a skincare brand that brings the spring water’s potency to your own medicine cabinet. Avène Dermatological Laboratories’ philosophy revolves around the concept of “living dermatology,” with products that harness the water’s nutrients and minerals to soothe and heal various conditions. Working with skin experts from around the world, the brand further enhances its formulations with derm-approved active ingredients.
Picture
One such collaboration, led by Jean-Marc Lemaître from the Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Biotherapy in Montpellier, France, has resulted in a groundbreaking approach to anti-aging through Avène’s “senescence cellular” strategy, which stimulates cellular regeneration. Working closely with Geneva, Switzerland–based dermatologist Jean-Hilaire Saurat, Avène has also developed the “comedo-reverse” strategy, using ComedoclastinTM, a plant extract from the seeds of milk thistle, to prevent the production of blemishes before they make it to the surface. “Together, these efforts are leading to a better understanding of skin health and the development of preventive approaches to halt the progression of diseases,” says Daniel Redoulès, Pierre Fabre’s scientific communications officer.

Plant-based, sustainable beauty
Intertwined with Avène is sister brand Klorane, which specializes in the use of medicinal plants in beauty products, guided by a team of botanists, pharmacists and dermatologists. Among their hero products is the Hair Strengthening Serum, formulated with quinine and organic edelweiss, which work synergistically to slow down hair loss, strengthen hair and regenerate fibres—taking both a proactive and reactive approach.

Picture
The Pierre Fabre organization also remains steadfast in its commitment to the environment, with a self-governing (but externally approved by AFNOR) Green Impact Index scoring system to drive the development of more eco-conscious and socially responsible formulas. Striving for at minimum a neutral impact, they go the extra mile to achieve a positive impact on the planet.

FASHION-WEEK FACIALISTS SHARE THEIR 5 HACKS FOR PERFECT SKIN, FAST

With long days, little sleep and traveling between four fashion capitals in as many weeks to contend with, how do models keep their skin looking so fresh when they walk the runways? Here, expert aestheticians share their backstage secrets for a flawless complexion with KEEKS REID

The essentials that really count
With time tight and space low backstage, facialists tend to stick to a tried-and-true routine that boasts minimal steps and maximum results. Milena Naydenov, head facialist at 111Skin, has five key steps she sticks to, while the Tata Harper team has whittled it down to four. Essentials include thorough cleansing, eye care, cryo massage, and masking for hydrated, plump-looking skin – the ideal base for any makeup look. When it comes to the first step of the routine, Naydenov focuses on cleansing to ensure makeup artists start with a fresh canvas, and she says it should also be your starting point for replicating model skin at home.

Focus on the eyes
Undereye puffiness can be a big problem pre-show, so Naydenov turns her attentions to the eye area straight after cleansing to instantly depuff and awaken. I do a light massage around the eyes to stimulate blood circulation, which reduces redness and puffiness, and temporarily tightens the skin, too.

Try an ice massage
If there is time, a full-face massage is excellent for transforming tired-looking skin. “I start my routine using a small steam wand, targeting under the eyes, frown lines, nasolabial folds and lines around the mouth to purify pores, and leave a smoother, more revived complexion,” says Naydenov.

Next, use chilled cryo globes. “Starting from your nose, follow the contours of your face, working the tools underneath your cheeks and sweeping gently upwards, from underneath your cheekbones to the top of your ear,” Naydenov says. Then, repeat the sweeping method along the jawline, and move up to your eyes. “Starting from underneath the inner corner of your eye, hold the tools in place before sweeping upwards towards your temples.” Ensure you have moisturized well with an eye mask or cream for good ‘slip’, then finish on the forehead, working the tools upwards from the center towards the hairline.

Make time for masking
Treatment masks are a huge part of the pre-show glow.  Backstage, the Tata Harper team also relies on masks for juicy-looking skin. “We let it sit for 20 minutes,” reveals Harper. “Then, instead of rinsing off with water, we mist an essence over the mask to create a milky mix of the products that we can massage in. The effect is so good for plumping tired or dry skin.”

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Essences are recommended across the board, to prime the skin for a plumped, pillow-like finish. “I use Antioxidant Essence,” says Naydenov. “They're lightweight and enriches the skin with moisture and preps it for better absorption for the next steps in the routine.” Meanwhile, Harper advises an essence, post-treatment mask, to lock in hydration. Backstage, Harper’s team uses those products to remove remnants of mask residue, too: “It supercharges the results, as you’re not rinsing off the mask,” she adds.

Here’s Why Your Oily Skin Routine Needs A Powder Face Wash

Clinique Fresh Pressed Renewing Powder Cleanser

Trust a girl with oily skin to give you the best skincare advice! We spend our teenage years stripping our faces with harsh cleansers. We skip the moisturiser thinking that it will help avoid greasiness and never consider upgrading our cleansing routine to rectify the issue. This is why as adults we’re on a skin repair journey and finally understand how to hack an oily skin routine to stay clear and blemish-free.

Meet your new skin care obsession: cleansing powders. Like oil-based makeup removers and BB creams, these granular concoctions originally became popular amongst Korean and Japanese skin care devotees — and they’re beauty game changers.

Cleansing powders are concentrated versions of liquid cleansers that form a paste or foam when activated with water. Most contain naturally derived ingredients like rice bran, oats and adzuki beans to give the product gentle, non-abrasive exfoliating properties, making this product perfect for those with sensitive skin and oily skin.

Truth be told, there’s no big secret to dealing with oily or combination skin. You must be consistent with your routine and use the right products that offer sebum regulation instead of sebum clearing. Yes, your skin’s natural oils will do you good, and it is essential to keep them safe against overly drying cleansers. And one product that I’ve personally felt works wonders for oily skin is the powder face wash.

What are cleansing powders?
Powder-based cleansers and exfoliators are formulated to get rid of added oils and are full of active natural hydrators to effectively cleanse your skin without over-drying it. An ideal second step in double cleansing, powder cleansers effectively remove any traces of makeup or cleansing balms/oils left behind.

With an added exfoliation action, they almost work as a daily polish for your skin. And squeaky clean is a prerequisite for keeping your skin gunk and acne-free. The best thing about cleansing powders, according to Boston-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch, is that they’re totally customizable. “You have control over the final texture,” Hirsch told Shop TODAY about the powder's DIY approach.

To get your perfect low-foaming lather, adjust the amount of water you add while rubbing your hands together with a coin-sized amount of powder. For a deep exfoliation, you’ll just need a splash of liquid. Use more water if you’re looking for a milder cleanse.

The zero-waste environmental-friendly solution appears as an ideal alternative to appeal those who do not like the texture of solid cosmetics

Hirsch also noted that cleansing powders are TSA-friendly, making them ideal for travel, and that they typically contain less preservatives than liquid products since there's no water in the formula.
According to shoppers and beauty lovers, these cleansing powders should definitely be added to your shopping cart.

Can drinking water make skin glow? Know if it actually works

9/18/2023

Picture
When asked for their secret to flawless skin, many celebrities claim that it has to do with their water intake (and maybe glutathione?). And although scientific research has established that hydration is a crucial part of maintaining overall health, you may be wondering: Can you really hydrate your way to healthy skin?

Drinking water is often touted as the sure-shot solution that will help you get rid of all your skin problems. But does it? Know the benefits of drinking water for skin.

Do you drink a lot of water every day? Drinking water is a great way to keep yourself hydrated, your health vital in check and your skin looking beautiful. But is it the best solution to ward off all your skin problems? While there are many benefits of drinking water for your skin, it is vital to know that it alone won’t be able to help you. Having said that, let’s find out whether or not drinking water is great for your skin.

What are the benefits of drinking water for skin?
Your body is made up of 70 percent water, which is why it is an essential nutrient or ingredient for humans to function properly. Since the skin is the mirror to the internal body and mind, having a healthy body will reflect on your skin. That being said, water does not directly benefit the skin. However, water is essential for performing bodily functions and ensuring that all organs perform to their optimum capacity. But many people feel that drinking enough water will reverse their wrinkles, fine lines, or ageing, which sadly will not happen.

Our skin is made up of seven layers, which include the epidermis and dermis. The lower layers are alive and need water, hydration and a balanced diet. However, The topmost layer is dead and needs to be moisturised and prevented from environmental factors like pollution. As a skincare routine, applying water on top and locking it with a moisturiser is essential.

Does drinking water hydrate skin at all?
When you drink water, it doesn't automatically rush straight to the skin and show up as dew. It hydrates cells once absorbed into the bloodstream, and then it is filtered by the kidneys. Drinking water flushes the system and hydrates the body overall, which is definitely good for you, says Dr Veenu Jindal, consultant dermatologist. But it doesn't actually hydrate thirsty skin as much as it improves blood flow to the surface, according to research. It is a lack of water instead, that shows up as dryness, irritation, fine lines and acne on the skin. Plus, a variety of structures in the skin that support collagen production require water to work more effectively, making it an important backbone for keeping skin elastic and plump anyway.

The pros say that dehydration can alter the oil and sebum levels in the skin, leading to a higher chance of acne. And when skin is inflamed or dry, especially with people that have inflammatory conditions like eczema or psoriasis, there are more chances of flareups.

So how do you hydrate your skin when it is dry?
How your skin retains water is a function of transepidermal water loss. If you have dry skin, your lipid barrier is weak and impaired, so you don't have enough oil to hold on to the water you have. In this case, it is best to hydrate your skin with topical products, and then seal it all in with a moisturiser that'll hold it all together. “Hydration is the absorption of moisture from the air and then infusing your cells with water to improve your skin’s ability to absorb moisture and nutrients. Whereas, moisturising is about trapping and locking in the moisture to build your skin’s natural protective barrier,” says Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, consultant dermatologist at MedLinks.

Dr Jindal suggests layering humectants, emollients and occlusives to really keep all the water inside. “Humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin act as a sponge to hold in, and then pull in hydration to the skin, emollients smooth the rough edges between cells in the outer layer of the skin, while occlusives form a protective, waterproof seal to prevent losing all the water you've just put in,” she says.
It is best to use these serums and moisturisers once you've washed your face (or misted it) so they can pull and maintain the moisture. It's important to note that a humectant applied on dry skin in dry surroundings (like on a flight) can pull water from the skin back to the environment. In such cases, always layer a humectant with an occlusive layer to protect.

How much water should one drink to get clear and glowing skin?
A person should consume at least two to three litres of water daily for optimum health. In some scenarios, water consumption should be even higher for lactating mothers who require four to five litres of water. Also, people and kids who indulge in outdoor sports need more water to stay hydrated. Similarly, people in hot and humid climates might need more water. However, the focus should also be on fluids with good electrolyte levels, like nimbu pani and coconut water, as they have optimum levels of electrolytes. This is especially important in hot climates like India. In the above cases, normal water might not be sufficient and can sometimes lead to dehydrated skin.

Hot, cold or warm water – which one is the best?
Water temperature does not matter, and it is a myth that a particular water temperature is better. However, it is best to drink water at room temperature. Cold water can lead to respiratory tract infections, and hot water can lead to mouth ulcers. Also, people should stop storing and drinking water from plastic bottles. They can use copper and earthen clay pots to hold water and transfer it to steel or glass jars. Both copper and earthen pots transfer essential minerals to water, which is why they are highly recommended.

Are there any side effects of drinking too much water for skin?
The kidney’s function is to take care of the excess water in our body. When we drink more water, the kidneys will produce more urine, thereby solving the problem of excess water in the body. In case someone drinks less water, they will show signs of dehydration. As a result of dehydration, the skin will become dry and come back slowly when pinched on the forearm or lead to chapped lips, which is a sign that a person needs to drink more water.

Besides normal drinking water, vegetables and seasonal fruits also contain good water levels. Adding seasonal vegetables or fruits like cucumber and watermelon to a person’s daily diet is highly recommended, as they provide our bodies with essential nutrients. As a rule, 50 per cent of a person’s diet must include 2-3 fruits and vegetables.

Can drinking water alone can clear your skin?
Our body has defence mechanisms available to them, like the gut, respiratory tract, kidney, and skin. All four of them are the excretory channels of our body, and they have their inbuilt mechanisms, which are very complex and help to clear out the toxins on their own. So, drinking water alone cannot be a one-stop single solution to clear our skin. What is more important is to have a balanced lifestyle and healthy routine, which includes a well-balanced diet and regular exercise, sleeping on time and not taking a lot of mental stress. All these things are more important than just focusing on a one-stop solution.

We can honestly say, fresh skin is the desire of every women. Fresh, pimple free, smooth, porcelain clear skin that is. One of the best ways to keep the skin looking its best (and help your expensive skin moisturizer work its very best) is to consume for anti-inflammatory foods. Anti-inflammatory foods prevent acne triggers which stop your skin from flairing up. The trick is to prevent acne from forming in the first place to avoid having dark spots and the need to clear it. Which means you can dip into your luxurious face cream (which aren't made for acne) and enjoy the full benefit of it- completely!

What is Skin inflammation
Inflammation is when your skin fare up- think acne especially. Inflammation is inevitable. It's the body's natural way of defending against foreign invaders and helping us heal from injury, which is good—it's when it goes into overdrive and turns into chronic inflammation that things can get hairy. "Chronic inflammation can interrupt and damage body cells.

You can’t go wrong with incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and fish into your diet. One of the puzzle pieces to minimizing acne is consuming foods that naturally reduce inflammation, boost collagen formation, and block environmental toxins.

When body cells don't function properly due to a repeated stressor, they are unable to protect against disease or can initiate changes in the body which can contribute to the development of a disease," explains Andrea Conner, M.P.H., RDN, of Medical Nutrition Therapy in Scottsdale, Arizona. Some diseases associated with chronic inflammation include cancer, heart disease, arthritis and diabetes.

The good news is that a healthy diet and lifestyle can help combat chronic inflammation that causes acne and lower your risk of disease. "Lowering inflammation in the body means eating more anti-inflammatory foods says Toronto-based dietitian Pamela Fergusson, RD, Ph.D. This way of eating means you'll get in those good-for-you nutrients that work together to quell inflammation while limiting the foods that tend to trigger it.

And while there isn't any one food in particular that will cure all your ills (a 2019 study published in Nutrients, among other studies, shows that the Mediterranean diet is effective in combating inflammation), certain foods pack a powerful punch of antioxidants to help you get started. In addition to including more of these healthy foods in your routine, aim for seven to eight hours of sleep per night, stay active and reduce stress where you can to fight inflammation.

What causes inflammation such as acne? Snead explains it can result from exposure to environmental toxins, a lingering virus, aging or chronic stress. But what you eat contributes, too.

What foods helps to fight inflammation? These foods keep your skin fresh and free from inflamation. The trick is to load up on these foods for months and then ease up on them. You would want your body accustomed to these foods by eating them daily and get your system going with them before easing up on your consumption at least not consuming them daily and switch to bi weekly.

  1. Blueberries
  2. Dark Chocolate

Blueberries
One antioxidant in particular stands out as an especially strong anti-inflammatory: quercetin. Found in citrus, olive oil and dark-colored berries, quercetin is a flavonoid (a beneficial substance or phytonutrient that’s prevalent in fresh foods) that fights inflammation and even cancer. The presence of quercetin as well as the fellow phytonutrient anthocyanins (so-called water-soluble vacuolar pigments that usually appear red, purple or blue) explains why there are so many health benefits of blueberries. A study found that consuming more blueberries slowed cognitive decline and improved memory and motor function. The scientists in this study believed these results were due to the antioxidants in blueberries protective the body from oxidative stress and reducing inflammation.

Packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, these berries are also high in potassium and vitamin C, making them the top choice of doctors and nutritionists, they are also anti-inflammatory.

Health Benefits of Blueberries
Wondering about the health benefits of blueberries and how they’re beneficial? Here are the top seven health benefits of blueberries:

Very High in Antioxidants: Antioxidants are compounds that fight harmful free radicals and provide a myriad of health benefits. In fact, antioxidants not only prevent cell damage, but also protect against several types of chronic disease, including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Blueberries are one of the best sources of antioxidants. One study in China compared the antioxidant capacity of blueberries, blackberries and strawberries and found that blueberries not only contained the highest total antioxidant capacity, but also contained more of many specific types of antioxidants, including phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins. Wild blueberries are especially high in antioxidants. A study in the British Journal of Nutrition, for example, found that supplementing participants with wild blueberry powder increased serum antioxidant status by 8.5 percent after just one hour.

Thanks to the antioxidant properties, blueberries are often used in formulations with lutein to support eye health as well.

Helps to Alleviate Inflammation: Although inflammation is a normal immune response that helps protect your body from illness and injury, chronic inflammation is at the root of most diseases. In fact, inflammation is thought to contribute to a wide range of conditions. Thanks to their high antioxidant content, blueberries have been shown to have a significant anti-inflammatory effect in the body. A 2014 test-tube study even found that the polyphenols found in blueberries helped reduce the activity of several markers of inflammation.

Blueberry Nutrition Facts
Blueberries are a nutrient-dense food, meaning that there aren’t a lot of calories in blueberries, but they pack in a good amount of vitamins and minerals. The blueberries nutrition profile is especially high in fiber, vitamin K, manganese and vitamin C.

One cup (about 148 grams) of raw blueberries provides approximately:
  • 84 calories
  • 21.5 grams carbohydrates
  • 1.1 grams protein
  • 0.5 gram fat
  • 3.6 grams dietary fiber
  • 28.6 micrograms vitamin K (36 percent DV)
  • 0.5 milligram manganese (25 percent DV)
  • 14.4 milligrams vitamin C (24 percent DV)
  • 0.1 milligram vitamin B6 (4 percent DV)
  • 0.1 milligram thiamine (4 percent DV)
  • 0.1 milligram riboflavin (4 percent DV)
  • 0.8 milligram vitamin E (4 percent DV)
  • 0.1 milligram copper (4 percent DV)

In addition to the nutrients listed above, blueberries also contain some niacin, vitamin A, folate, pantothenic acid, zinc, iron, magnesium and phosphorus. Not only that, but blueberries also contain other beneficial compounds, including resveratrol, anthocyanin, phytonutrients and pterostilbene.
It’s this blueberry nutrition profile that provides all the wonderful health benefits of blueberries.

Dark Chocolate
There is a reason why the Mediterranean diet and other healthy eating plans stress eating dark chocolates, colorful, plant-based foods, whole grains and olive oil. Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds in these foods that protect the body from inflammation. And, you can get polyphenol power from dark chocolate which is rich in these beneficial compounds. Inflammation occurs naturally in the body as part of its immune response. When you’re fighting an infection or injury, your body sends inflammatory cells to the rescue to help you heal faster. But if inflammation lingers, turning into chronic inflammation, it means your body remains in a state of high alert, increasing risk for some serious health issues, including joint pain, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. Here’s where anti-inflammatory dark chocolate can help: It contains phytonutrients known as flavonoids, which are health-boosting antioxidants found in certain plants. “Flavanols, a specific type of flavonoid, are a compound found in cacao and the raw cocoa bean,” says Sandon. “They have biological activity that helps combat inflammation in the inflammatory pathways, so it can help block some of those pathways and slow down the inflammation.”

Dark chocolate is any chocolate that contains at least 50% cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and sugar. Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate isn't made with milk, though it could have trace amounts from cross-contamination during manufacturing. Lower-quality dark chocolate also could have oils, butter fats, and artificial flavors. Humans have been consuming chocolate since the Mayans first drank it around 1500 B.C. Chocolate is still a popular treat today, and now we have even more reasons to crave it, especially dark chocolate.

Dark Chocolate Health Benefits
The cocoa used to make dark chocolate is rich in flavanols, which are chemicals found in plants like the cacao tree (where the cocoa bean grows). The unique flavan-3-ols in cacao beans are what gives pure cocoa a bitter taste.

Because cocoa's flavanols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it might help to:

Prevents Inflammation
70% cocoa dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, which have some major anti-inflammatory effects. Flavanols help to reduce inflammation and keep the cells that line the arteries healthy. Antioxidants fight inflammation and free radicals, which can help your immunity and reduce your risk of disease.

Makes Your Skin Glow
New studies show you might be able to ditch the sunblock and eat dark chocolate instead. (Of course, you really should still wear sunscreen.) Flavanols protect your skin from UV rays and may also prevent wrinkles.

Improve vision
One small study found that people who ate dark chocolate had improved vision 2 hours later compared to people who ate milk chocolate instead. It's not clear how long this effect might last or whether this might work in the real world. A similar small study did not show the same effects on vision from eating dark chocolate. We need much more research into this possible benefit.

Dark Chocolate Nutrition Facts
Because dark chocolate has an extremely high polyphenol content, it may help you reduce oxidative stress and combat free radicals. Here's how dark chocolate stacks up to other antioxidant-rich foods in terms of polyphenol content: Dark chocolate: 1664mg per 100g, Milk chocolate: 236mg per 100g.

You’ll get the most flavanols from eating chocolate that’s 70% or more dark. Dark chocolate contains a little fiber along with minerals, including:
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Phosphorus
  • Copper
One-quarter cup of dark chocolate, about 1.5 ounces or 2 large squares, contains:
  • 220 calories
  • 2 grams of protein
  • 13 grams of fat
  • 24 grams of carbohydrates
  • 3 grams of fiber
  • 18 grams of sugar
  • 3 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 9 milligrams of sodium

What Type of Dark Chocolate Should I Be Looking For?
While these beverages are certainly trendy, not all products are created equal. In order to reap any health benefits, you have to look for products that are made with the right chocolate, like dark chocolate, not milk chocolate. The taste will be a little bitter.” The healthiest dark chocolate typically has around 70 percent cacao, but Sandon says the percentage doesn’t matter as much as the processing technique used to make it. Dutch processing, a common technique that uses alkalizing agents to lessen the bitter taste, will destroy the anti-inflammatory flavanols, she says. “This is most of the stuff that’s out there,” she says. If you want the benefit, you need to look carefully to find it.”

How Can I Make Healthy Hot Dark Drinking Chocolate at Home?
If you can’t find a dark drinking chocolate brand (or a dark chocolate bar) that has the essential no-alkali credentials, not to worry. Go for Hersheys - Hersheys chocolates are known to be made with organic cocoa. It’s not terribly complicated to concoct your own dark chocolate drink right at home. The basic technique is to melt dark chocolate bars and add water, cow’s milk, or plant-based milks, such as oat or almond milk, to taste.

If you don’t have the time or equipment for melting with a double boiler, it’s also possible to turn inflammation-fighting dark chocolate into liquid in the microwave. The trick is to melt it slowly. “Start by melting the chocolate at 30-second intervals,” Sandon says. “Stir it, and then add a little more time so you don’t burn it.”

As far as what liquid you add to it to finish it off for a delicious mug, Sandon says that’s a matter of personal preference. “I don’t think that using plant-based milks or creamers makes much of a difference in how healthy it is,” she says. “If you want a treat with healthy protein, you’re better off using cow’s milk, since plant-based milks don’t contain as much protein, and they don’t have as much calcium or vitamin D either.”

The best way to consume dark chocolate
When choosing which type of dark chocolate to eat, a higher percentage of cacao is best. "The more cacao, the more healthy nutrients, the less sugar, and the less other potentially negative ingredients," Hunnes says. In particular, 80% cacao is the minimum that Hunnes recommends for achieving health benefits. Hunnes says that you can have up to 20 to 30 grams per day of 80% dark chocolate, though if it's a lower percentage, you may want to eat a smaller amount each day. To make your dark chocolate intake even healthier, she also suggests choosing non-dairy versions or trying cacao nibs, which are roasted cacao beans. Hunnes also advises limiting your consumption of less healthy sweets, like milk chocolate or white chocolate, as they contain higher amounts of sugar and fat.

You can’t go wrong with incorporating these two foods into your diet. One of the puzzle pieces to minimizing acne is consuming foods that naturally reduce inflammation, boost collagen formation, and block environmental toxins.

Here’s a reminder how food works: What you eat gets broken down and transported everywhere through your blood, so results aren’t going to happen overnight the way topical treatments might.

Between your skin and you, it’s a relationship where food, products, and your mental health all work together. Food is just one point of the triangle to naturally fueling your skin with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients so it can be strong and healthy. Think of it like a foundation your body needs. There’s no stronger way to build that than from the inside out.
