The 5 Best Lipstick Colors If You Have Brown Eyes, Experts Say

Whether you sport the same signature makeup look every day or you change your style from one hour to the next, it pays to know which shades are most flattering on you. The key is to take your cues from the various color tones in your skin, hair, and eyes—all of which can sway your color palette in one direction or another. Women with brown eyes can wear a particularly wide range of lipstick colors since brown is a mix of all three primary colors, experts say.

"Since brown is considered a neutral color, the great news is there are endless options to compliment brown eyes," says celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli. "Brown eyes can really work with a range of makeup undertones. The key is to use shades that compliment your shade of brown, whether that's a bold color to offset your deeper brown shade, or a warm tone to bring out the hazel specs in your browns."

1. Berry or plum
Scibelli says that berry tones are "some of the most commonly used lipstick shades amongst brown eyes.Berry tones—which can include plums, mauves, and deeper pinks—can really compliment medium to deeper brown eyes since these tones are bold enough to create that balance with the eye color," he says.

High fashion makeup artist Elaina Bardo agrees that berry tones are ideal, especially if you have "deep red or cinnamon undertones in your brown eyes." She suggests trying Bougiee Cosmetics' Blackberry,  MAC Cosmetics' Burning Love  or Tom Ford's Aphrodite.

2. Deep ruby red
Badro also suggests an intense, ruby-red lip for people with brown eyes. By pairing this look with a more neutral eye—think glowing gold, champagne, bronze, or taupe—you'll create an old Hollywood look that brings high drama. The warm tones and shimmer will help add dimension to the darker shade of the eye.

3. Coral
Women with brown eyes should also feel comfortable stepping outside their comfort zones and playing with brighter-colored lips. Badro suggests trying coral shades for a lively look and specifically recommends Dior's 636 Ultra Dior. "This lipstick has a high shine finish, so you can skip the gloss," she tells Best Life. Also, Givenchy Rouge Interdit No 15 Orange Adrenaline and Hermes Rouge Satin #36 Corail Flamingo

Neutral brown, peach, or gold tones on the eyes will help round out the effect of your bold lip. Alternatively, using echoes of the same coral shade on the eyes and cheeks can also create a chic monochrome look.

4. Soft pink or dusty rose
For a no-makeup makeup look, women with brown eyes can opt for a soft pink or dusty rose shade, says Badro. In particular, she recommends YSL' Rouge Velopte Shine 163 Show Stopping Rose or Nars' 888 Dolce Vita.

However, the undertones of your eyes and skin may affect which exact shade you choose. "Cool skin undertones look great in pinks with blue and purple undertones. Warm skin tones look best with warmer undertones. Typically, neutral tones look good with either," Badro notes.

5. Nude
Finally, a nude lip is a great everyday choice for women of all eye colors, but it's an especially attractive option for those with brown eyes. This barely-there look can be paired with a subtle, neutral eyeshadow in soft browns, coppers, and golds for a sun-kissed, natural look.

A nude lip can also help balance a more dramatic pop of color on the eye—a look that's been popular on the runway as of late.
