Recently, undone French-girl hair and its laissez-faire approach to styling almost made our hair dryers redundant. Well, it's time to bring them out again, thanks to the XXL bombshell blowout. The volume we once tried to smooth into submission is being tousled back into existence and is poised to be a must-do summer trend for going-out and date-night hair.
The internet is currently awash with different influences for the look. “It is a total modern revisit of ’70s Jerry Hall hair,” says hairstylist Neil Moodie. Other references unsurprisingly include Barbie the movie and Pamela Anderson's ’90s hair. Whatever the inspiration, the fact remains that we're finally going all in for reviving the XXL bombshell blowout. How to create the XXL bombshell blowout The XXL bombshell blowout is characterized by an extra-high root lift at the crown before cascading out into big '70s-style waves that surround the face. “If there's no root lift, you simply won't get the volume elsewhere, which is why root sprays and volumizing mousses work best,” says Moodie, “Use a blast from the cold-shot button on your hair dryer to set the hair and pin each section,” says Moodie. “All importantly, make sure that the roots are completely dry.” Alternatively, rough-dry your hair and use a large curling wand, setting the waves with hairspray and pinning them for 30 minutes before gently brushing your hair out. Or follow the advice of content creator Olivia Daytonn, who uses the Dyson Airwrap and recommends using both the hot and cold shots to make the curl last longer. “For extra lift along the front hairline, use a wide-tooth comb to lift the hair up a couple of centimeters away from the roots, mist with hairspray, and blast with heat,” Moodie adds. Extensions may be necessary if you have really fine hair, while Moodie recommends hair steaming for Afro hair prior to creating this voluminous look. “You can do this at home by adding a treatment mask to your hair after shampooing and wrapping your head in cling film for 20 minutes,” he says. “Then sleep with your hair wrapped flat in a silk scarf or blow-dry it out with a large round bristle brush.” The XXL bombshell blowout doesn't have to be worn loose all the time, either. To re-create the look, Moodie recommends the same steps except when you brush the hair out, spray hairspray onto a flat bristle brush, and then scoop the hair into a ponytail on the crown of the head. All that's left to do is to give it some attitude with a good hair flick.
